The gritty world of Peaky Blinders is making its way to the big screen, and fans can rejoice as Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as the infamous Tommy Shelby. The upcoming movie will also see the return of other prominent cast members, bringing fresh excitement to the Peaky Blinders universe on Netflix.
Although the beloved BBC drama wrapped its six-season run in April 2022, Tommy Shelby’s story is far from over.
When Can We Expect the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
At the moment, there’s no confirmed release date. Earlier this year, the film was officially announced and greenlit, sparking major casting news as production gains momentum. While plot specifics are being kept under tight wraps, show creator Steven Knight revealed one significant detail—the film will take place during World War II—a tantalizing hint shared with Deadline following the series finale.
A Star-Studded Lineup and Script Progress for Netflix’s ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie
In addition to Cillian Murphy, who recently won an Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer (2023), several other big names have joined the cast of the Peaky Blinders movie. Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible, Dune), Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin, Saltburn), and Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs) are all on board. However, the roles these actors will play remain a mystery. Series creator Steven Knight has hinted at even more star power and new faces in the project, though he has yet to reveal specific details.
Back in 2022, during an interview on the Heart Breakfast podcast, Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, shared that he was nearly finished writing the movie’s script. “Yes, I’m writing it right now. I’m almost done, and we’re getting ready to shoot. I’m also setting up some film and TV studios in Digbeth, Birmingham,” he said.
That same year, Knight and the Peaky Blinders cast reflected on the show’s legacy in an interview with Esquire. During the discussion, Knight revealed that the new cast members introduced in season six would play pivotal roles in the film. “In series six, we introduced the new generation, and they will definitely be part of the movie’s storyline,” Knight explained. “It’s about finding those actors that you just watch and think, ‘There’s the future.'”
While Peaky Blinders ended, Murphy has occasionally hinted at his interest in returning as Tommy Shelby—if the story feels right. In a May 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Murphy said, “If there’s more story to tell, I’d love to do it, but it has to be the right fit. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we ended on a high note. I’m proud of that final series, so any continuation has to feel legitimate and justified.” He added, “I’d be open to a movie if the story demands it. But I have no updates for now.”
