Are you a fan of comedy but are not interested in watching shows like Friends and The Office? If yes, then why not give a try to these 5 obscure comedy shows?
1. Man Seeking Woman
Created by- Simon Rich
Starring- Jay Baruchel, Eric Andre, Britt Lower, Mark McKinney, and Robin Duke
Man Seeking Woman is based on Simon Rich’s short story compilation called ‘The Last Girlfriend On Earth.’ This surrealist comedy series ran for three seasons. It follows Josh Greenberg, played by Jay Baruchel after he is dumped by his long-term girlfriend for Adolf Hitler. In each episode, we find Josh in different surreal and awkward situations as he tries to find a suitable girlfriend. The series has its ups and downs but it is pretty consistent with its comedy. I really enjoyed the show because it is so different from all the shows about people in their twenties trying to find love. The show has trolls, gigantic octopuses, and alternative dimensions.
2. NTSF:SD:SUV
Created by- Paul Scheer
Starring- Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, Kate Mulgrew, Rebecca Romijn, Martin Starr, and Rob Riggle.
I grew up watching CID and Crime Patrol. It is safe to say that my childhood was messed up. The characters in these shows were seemingly normal people doing the improbable thanks to their amazing medical analysists and technology teams. However, as I grew older I realized that in real life the police force isn’t that glamorous. NTSF:SD:SUV is a black comedy show that goofs on shows like CID and their American equivalents. Produced by Adult Swim, NTSF:SD:SUV has a fantastic cast and each episode features cameos from Hollywood bigwigs. Give this show a try if you want a good laugh.
3. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Created By- Tina Fey and Robert Carlock
Starring- Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Carol Kane, and Jane Krakowski
From the poster of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt you might be expecting a cutesy show with quirky characters. But don’t let the poster fool you. This show follows Kimmy Schmidt, a woman in her 30s who was kidnapped by a pastor and kept inside a bunker for over 15 years with three other women after she manages to escape. Ready to live her life on her own terms, Kimmy moves to New York and starts living with Titus, a singer and performer who dreams of being on Broadway. Aside from being hilarious, this show has amazing musical numbers and several tender scenes that show human strength and perseverance. With only 3 short seasons, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the perfect show to binge on a long weekend.
4. Delocated
Created By- Jon Glaser
Starring- Jon Glaser, Jacob Kogan, Nadia Dajani, Eugene Mirman, Kevin Dorff, and Zoe Lister-Jones
Delocated is an Adult Swim comedy show created and starring Jon Glaser. The show follows Glaser’s character a man who is in the Witness Protection Program that stars in a reality TV show. The reality show revolves around what it means to be in the Witness Protection Program. I love the wacky comedy of this show as the main characters wear disguises for their faces and voices. As the series progresses, Yvgeny, a Russian mafia associate is introduced who wishes to kill Glaser’s character and try to become a stand-up comedian. Although this show is hard to find online, it is worth a watch.
5. Strangers With Candy
Created by- Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Amy Sedaris, and Mitch Rouse
Starring- Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, and Greg Hollimon
Strangers With Candy is another American sitcom that doesn’t get the love it deserves. The show follows a 46-year-old woman who used to live as a prostitute and drug dealer trying to turn her life around by finishing high school. The show satirizes educational after-school television specials that try to offer advice to children. This show is full of wacky, subversive humor and really benefits from Amy Sedaris’ amazing performance.
