Fans rejoice as many beloved actors return to the MCU. While some comebacks are confirmed, others are highly rumoured.
After Avengers: Endgame, Marvel decided to pivot from the original cast and introduce new superheroes and supervillains to the cinematic universe. However, fans continued to stay loyal to the original set of actors and are clamouring for their return on the silver screen. The good news is that their prayers have been answered as many fan favourites, such as Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, and James Spader are confirmed to return to the MCU.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter’s “Award Chatter,” Downey Jr. confirmed that he would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but he won’t be reprising his role as Iron Man. Instead, he will be returning to the franchise as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Dooms Day directed by the Russo brothers.
Downey Jr. stated that despite his exit from the MCU, he continued to remain in touch with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who initiated the idea of the actor’s return. He additionally mentioned his wife’s reaction, “And Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’ We both realised that this was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about the guy, a very sophisticated creative thinker.”
James Spader Returning To MCU As Ultron For Marvel’s Vision Series
James Spader has also been confirmed to return to the MCU. The Emmy-award-winning actor is set to reprise his role as the voice of Ultron in the yet-untitled Vision series. The series will be a follow-up to the WandaVision show. Spader’s only MCU film was Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
Paul Bettany will return as Vision, the android who was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. In WandaVision, Wanda was able to bring back Vision with the power of magic and grief. However, he was also rebuilt as a ghostly white android. The new series will be helmed by Terry Matalas, the showrunner of Star Trek: Picard.
It is not yet known in what role Ultron will play in the story. Spader is a veteran actor who has successfully straddled a television and film career since the 80s. He is best known for his roles in Sex, lies, and videotapes, The Blacklist, Secretary, and Boston Legal. He was also in The Office.
Fans Speculate Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Return Too
Although Elizabeth Olsen’s character, Wanda Maximoff died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there has been a huge amount of speculation about Olsen’s return to the MCU especially after the new Vision series has been greenlit.
During a recent press conference when Olsen was asked about a possible Marvel return she said, “Specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel. I don’t want…it’s not that I don’t want to be associated with just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance.”
“I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need. I just need other characters in my life,” the actress added. “There’s no longevity in one character.”
Which Actors Are Rumored To Make Their MCU Return?
It has been rumoured that for Avengers: Secret Wars Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Nicholas Cage (Ghost Rider), Wesley Snipes (Blade), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) will return.
