Gangs of Wasseypur Re-Release Date and Other Details

On the 12th Anniversary of Gangs Of Wasseypur, the film is set to re-release in theatres around India. The two-part crime thriller directed by Anurag Kashyap was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2012 as well.

Anurag Kashyap on 27th August took to Instagram to announce the re-release of his cult classic films Gangs of Wasseypur I and II. The post read, “Sabka Badla Lene Wapis Aa Gaya Tera Faizal! Gangster Week- 30th Aug-5th Sept. Book Tickets At ‘149/*,” with the caption “In three days the Gan will be back again ..GOW back in cinemas.

He tagged the main cast of the film including actors Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Rajkumar Rao. This year the iconic gangster flicks are going to turn 12. Fans quickly flooded the post to show their excitement. With commentator writing, “The baap of gangster flick.”

Gangs of Wasseypur is a two-part black comedy directed by Anurag Kashyap and written by Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri. The film was released in 2012 at the Cannes Director’s Fortnight as a single film measuring a total of 321 minutes. The movie went on to win several awards for its dialogue, action, direction, writing, and acting at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival, Filmfare Awards, International Indian Film Academy Awards, National Film Awards, and Screen Awards.

What is Gangs Of Wasseypur about?

Gangs of Wasseypur are centred around the coal mafia of the Dhanbad region of Jharkhand. The two films span 68 years and follow several generations of a crime family trying to seek vengeance and the underlying corruption, family struggles, and politics between them.

In the first part, we follow Sardar Khan, his wife Nagma, his affairs with other women, how he creates his crime empire, and his confrontations with Ramadhir Singh, a local politician. The second part continues the story of the first film but focuses more on Sardar Khan’s son, Faizal.

Who is in the Gangs Of Wasseypur?

There are many fabulous actors in Gangs of Wasseypur. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee as Sardar Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat as Shahid Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Faizal Khan, Richa Chadda as Nagma Khatoon, Piyush Mishra as Nasir, Jameel Khan as Asghar Khan, Huma Qureshi as Mohsina, Pankaj Tripathi as Sultan Qureshi, and Zeishan Quadri as Definite.

For his acting, Manoj Bajpayee was nominated for several awards including the Asia-Pacific Film Festival Award for Best Actor, the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and the International Indian Film Academy Award for Best Actor. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was also nominated for several awards and won the Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards. Anurag Kashyap won the Asia-Pacific Film Festival Jury Grand Prize and the Filmfare Award for best dialogue alongside Zeishan Quadri, and Akhilesh and Sachin Ladia.

Box Office Details of Gangs Of Wasseypur

During its initial release in 2012, Gangs Of Wasseypur was a sleeper hit with both parts collecting Rs 69 crores combined against a combined budget of Rs 39 crores. Writing for RobertEbert.com, critic Danny Bowes called Gangs of Wasseypur, “one of the most ambitious gangster films ever made, and quite possibly one of the best.” He further wrote, “worthy of discussion alongside Coppola’s first two Godfather films, or Leone’s Once Upon a Time In America.”

When is Gangs Of Wasseypur Re-Releasing?

According to Kashyap’s Instagram post, both parts of Gangs of Wasseypur will be released in the theatres from August 30th till September 5. What’s amazing is that the price of the ticket has been set at Rs 149 across all theatres.
