Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official submission for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. While the decision has sparked debate on social media, with some arguing that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light was a stronger contender, the jury behind the selection was led by acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Barua. Barua, an icon in Assamese cinema, headed a panel of 13 members in total. “All of us on the jury were driven by a passion for cinema,” Barua shared during an exclusive interview.
Barua elaborated on the selection criteria, stating, “The jury’s responsibility is to choose a film that holistically represents India. The film must showcase India’s social fabric and cultural essence. Laapataa Ladies excelled in capturing this ‘Indianness,’ which played a significant role in our decision.”
Following the announcement, director Kiran Rao revealed how her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, reacted to the news. “Aamir usually keeps things low-key, but he was thrilled this time. He said, ‘Mubarakan hum sabko, bahut bahut mubarak’ (Congratulations to all of us). I first spoke to him on the phone and later met him after his screening ended. He’s absolutely overjoyed but aware that the journey has only just begun, especially when it comes to the Oscar campaign. Just being selected as India’s entry feels like a reward in itself,” Rao remarked.
Actor Chhaya Kadam, who appeared in both Laapataa Ladies and All We Imagine As Light, expressed mixed emotions. While she’s elated about Laapataa Ladies‘ nomination, she also feels disappointed that Kapadia’s film didn’t receive a nod. “I’m happy for Laapataa Ladies but a bit sad for Payal’s film. The Film Federation made its choice, and I respect that, but it would’ve been great to see both films make it to the Oscars,” Kadam commented.
In response to the announcement, social media has erupted with memes, with many users humorously referencing Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Bollywood film Animal. Check some of these out-
