What to Watch: 5 Path Breaking Documentaries to Watch This Weekend

1. The Vow (JioCinema)

The Vow is an American true crime documentary series directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer. The show revolves around the cult NXIVM and its leader Keith Raniere. In the first season of the show, we see interviews from past members and the emotional and physical toll being a part of NXIVM took on them. The show also went into great detail about the financial crimes committed by NXIVM.

The second season picks up where the first season ends with the arrest and conviction of the leaders of NXIVM. The season focuses on NXIVM second-in-command Nancy Salzman and her daughters who were also a part of NXIVM. It also focuses on members of NXIVM and their fight to exonerate their leader, Keith Raniere.

2. The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (JioCinema)

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths Of Robert Durst is a true crime documentary television series about Robert Durst. The first season investigates the mysterious disappearance of Durst’s first wife, the murder of his friend Susan Berman, and the dismemberment of Durst’s neighbour, Moris Black. The documentary incorporates interviews from people known to Durst as well as security footage, news footage, and archival interviews, along with an exclusive with Durst himself. The second season focuses primarily on Durst’s confession, his arrest, and his subsequent conviction for the murders.

3. House Of Secrets : The Burari Deaths (Netflix)

House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths is a docuseries created by Leena Yadav and Anubhav Chopra. The docuseries explores the theories surrounding the death of 11 members of a family on the night of June 30, 2018. Termed the Burari deaths, the apparent mass suicide was subject to a lot of speculations related to the occult and black magic. The series features interviews with police officers, journalists, psychiatrists, neighbours, and friends of the family members. This case had a chokehold over Delhiites who had never heard or seen of something like this. The series is absolutely phenomenal but hard to watch as it deals with severe psychological issues that led to this situation.

4. Don’t F**K With Cats (Netflix)

Don’t F**K With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer is by far the most disturbing and haunting docuseries I have ever seen. At first, what I thought was a silly docuseries about internet sleuth turned out to be a docuseries about a sadistic and disturbed individual who tortured animals for notoriety and went on to gruesomely murder a person. The series chronicles the crowd-sourced amateur investigation into Luka Magnotta, a pornographic actor who posted videos of himself torturing innocent animals. Proceed with caution with this docuseries as it can be very graphic in its description.

5. Dancing On The Grave (Prime Video)

Dancing On The Grave is a true crime docuseries based on the Shakereh Khaleeli murder case. Shakereh Khaleeli was an Indian real estate developer whose second husband murdered her. The docuseries explores Shakereh’s life before her marriage to her second husband and how he manipulated her to isolate herself from her family and extort her financially before murdering her. Dancing On The Grave is a captivating docuseries.
