The release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse may face a significant delay, potentially not arriving in theatres until 2027.
A recent report by independent journalist Jeff Sneider, suggests that Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse will be delayed partly due to the close release window of Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man 4. Additionally, the report claims that Sony Pictures has discarded much of the existing work on Beyond the Spider-Verse to facilitate a creative overhaul. However, it has been noted that animators are “relieved” to have more time to refine the sequel.
This potential delay follows the controversy surrounding 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which faced allegations of poor working conditions. These issues were among the reasons for Beyond the Spider-Verse being postponed from its original release date in March 2024.
Why the Delay in Release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Following the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023, reports emerged indicating that Beyond the Spider-Verse would be delayed due to production challenges. Some animators and artists claimed that little progress had been made on the film. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller emphasized that their priority is to ensure the film is made to the highest standard, rather than rushing to meet a predetermined release date.
“I would say that just like we’re going to take the time necessary to make Beyond the Spider-Verse great,” Lord remarked, with Miller adding, “And we won’t back into a release date that doesn’t fit.”
Aiming for a Strong Conclusion to Miles Morales’ Story
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the third installment in the animated Spider-Man series, focusing on the journey of Miles Morales. The film will continue directly from the events of 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse. As Miles continues to forge his own path as Spider-Man, he embarks on an interdimensional adventure to alter the destinies of those he loves.
The anticipation for the third Spider-Verse film is immense, though concerns have been raised about the extended wait time for fans. Sony’s Spider-Verse films have received critical acclaim, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature. Such recognition underscores the high quality of these superhero films, even in animated form. As one observer noted, excellence requires time.
