The Penguin Outshines ‘The Batman’ with Early Praise—No Batman in Sight

The Penguin is receiving strong early reviews ahead of its debut on HBO. This Batman spinoff, which already has a higher early rating than the original movie (The Batman), is generating significant anticipation.

Directed by Matt Reeves, who also serves as an executive producer, and led by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is set one week after the events of The Batman. It follows Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot (played by Colin Farrell) as he navigates his rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld following the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone (portrayed by Mark Strong). Oz faces challenges, particularly from Carmine’s daughter Sofia (played by Cristin Milioti), a psychotic serial killer who competes with him for control of Gotham’s underworld. The cast also includes Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Kelly, and Clancy Brown.

Despite its ties to The Batman, The Penguin will not feature a confrontation between Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Oz. Reeves and LeFranc have clarified that Bruce Wayne will not appear in the series, as the focus is on developing Oz’s character. LeFranc has likened The Penguin to Scarface, with a deeper exploration of Oz’s complex emotions and heartbreak. Farrell’s portrayal of the character is expected to differ notably from the comic book version.

Farrell has hinted at the show’s dark and violent tone, promising intense drama and gore. He praised the writing team, noting how bold and dark the series becomes. Gotham itself is depicted as a critical character in the show, illustrating how corruption and the hoarding of wealth can devastate the city, elevating some while destroying others. The Penguin delves into the workings of Gotham, from the mayor’s office to the criminal underworld, revealing how villainy thrives at all levels.
