Searching for movies on Netflix is so hard. Your scroll for at least 45 minutes looking for something decent and as soon as you find something you fall asleep within the first 10 minutes away. That is why I have come up with this list of some really interesting movie titles on Netflix. Enjoy!
1. Red Eye
Red Eye is a psychological thriller starring Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. Directed by Wes Craven and written by Carl Ellsworth, Red Eye came out in 2005. If you are looking to wind down with a short film full of thrills and good acting, then this is the perfect film for you. The movie follows McAdam’s character Lisa, a hotel manager on a flight from Texas to Miami, who unknowingly becomes a part of an assassination attempt on a guest staying at her hotel.
2. Udaan
Udaan by Vikramaditya Motwane is a coming-of-age story. Written by Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, the film stars Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy, Aayan Boradia, Ram Kapoor, Manjot Singh, and Anand Tiwari. Udaan premiered at Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard where it received a standing ovation. The plot follows 17-year-old, Rohan, who is expelled from his school along with his friends for watching a pornographic film. Upon returning home, Rohan reconciles with his abusive father and his younger half-brother that he didn’t know of. He is forced by his father to start working at a local factory and pursue engineering instead of pursuing his dream of becoming a writer. Watch this movie if you want a good cry.
3. Infernal Affairs
Infernal Affairs is an action-thriller film directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak from a screenplay by Mak and Felix Chong. The film stars Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, Eric Tsang, Sammi Cheng, and Kelly Chen. Internal Affairs follows an undercover Hong Kong Police Force officer who infiltrates the mafia and another police officer who is a spy for the mafia. Infernal Affairs was remade into The Departed by Martin Scorsese. Highly recommend this movie to people who enjoy thrillers, copy movies, movies about the mafia, and to people who love Tony Leung.
4. Bombay Talkies
Bombay Talkies is an anthology film directed by Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, and Anurag Kashyap. The release of the film coincided with the 100th year of Indian cinema and focused on telling stories that celebrated the magic of filmmaking. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
The first short film titled ‘Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh,’ was directed by Karan Johar. It tells the story of a gay man, Avinash, who is thrown out of his house and the story of a woman, Gayatri, who is no longer intimate with her husband. Avinash and Gayatri soon start to work together and become extremely close. Soon Avinash starts suspecting that Gayatri’s husband is gay as well.
The second short film titled ‘Star,’ directed by Dibakar Banerjee, was adapted from Satyajit Ray’s short story, “Patol Babu, Film Star.” Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the film follows Purandar, a failed stage actor, who gets a small role in a film. His only dialogue is ‘Eh!’
The third film titled ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani,’ directed by Zoya Akhtar tells the story of a 12-year-old boy with the dreams of becoming a dancer. However, his strict father wants his son to follow a masculine path.
The last film by Anurag Kashyap is titled ‘Murabba.’ It tells the story of Vijay, a man travelling to Mumbai to fulfil his father’s dying wish- to meet Amitabh Bachchan and offer him homemade ‘murabba.’
5. Punch-Drunk Love
Punch-Drunk Love is an absurdist romantic film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Punch-Drunk Love follows a businessman with social anxiety who falls in love with his sister’s co-worker.
