1. Spaced
Created by- Jessica Stevenson and Simon Pegg
Starring- Jessica Stevenson, Simon Pegg, Julia Deakin, Nick Frost, Mark Heap, and Katy Carmichael
Daisy Steiner and Tim Bisley are two twenty-something Londoners who move in together as flatmates after Tim is dumped by his girlfriend and Daisy stops squatting. Spaced is an excellent show. It is personally my comfort show. I have seen it plenty of times. Like most British shows, it has only a few episodes and ran for only 2 seasons. The humour of the show is very surrealist and a lot of sequences are inspired by popular movies. Each episode of the show is directed by Edgar Wright, who went on to make Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead with Pegg.
2. Angry Young Men
Series Directed by- Namrata Rao
Starring- Javed Akhtar, Salim Khan, Salman Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, and Honey Irani.
Angry Young Men is a three-part documentary miniseries about the writer duo Salim-Javed. The show explores the lives and careers of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, best known for writing movies like Zanjeer, Deewar, Don, and Sholay and for creating the archetype of the ‘Angry Young Men,’ before and during these collaborative years. The show features interviews from Bollywood big-weights like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, and Dharmendra as well as directors, distributors, and writers. Despite not having seen any Salim-Javed films, I really enjoyed this series and got to learn a lot about Bollywood of the 60s and 70s.
3. Six Schizophrenic Brothers
Series Directed by- Lee Phillips
Starring- Donald Galvin, Lindsay Galvin, John Galvin, Richard Galvin, and Mark Galvin
Six Schizophrenic Brothers is an American documentary miniseries available on Prime Video. The documentary follows the ‘Galvin Family,’ of which six out of 12 siblings developed schizophrenia. In the series, we learn about how the family is torn apart by this mental illness and how far research and studies into this subject have come. We also see interviews with the 6 siblings who didn’t have schizophrenia.
4. Inside No.9
Created by- Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton
Starring- Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton
Inside No.9 is a British anthology series that ran for 9 series. Each episode in the series is a 30-minute long self-contained story with new characters and a new setting. The stories are often related to the number 9 for instance apartment 9, room 9…etc. The themes and tone of each episode tend to vary very drastically. One minute you are watching an episode about a football coach and in the next episode you come face to face with the Devil. It’s a really smart, well-written, and witty show, and Shearsmith and Pemberton who are in all episodes are fantastic.
