The much-awaited Indian 2, featuring Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, and Rakul Preet Singh, has turned into a box office debacle, a rare misstep in the illustrious career of director Shankar. Despite being Kamal Haasan’s first major release after the massive success of Vikram, Indian 2 failed to meet expectations or live up to the buzz surrounding the sequel to the iconic Indian.
India 2 Puts Lyca Productions in Financial Strain
Sources now suggest that Lyca Productions, the company backing the film, is grappling with severe financial strain. The poor performance of Indian 2 has deepened their troubles, especially after the franchise has been in development for five years. As losses continue to pile up, rumours from Kollywood hint that Indian 3, which was filmed simultaneously with Indian 2, could bypass a theatrical release and go straight to an OTT platform.
Although no official confirmation has been made by the filmmakers, insiders believe that confidence in the Indian franchise has dwindled, and the team is exploring a final solution. Production on both sequels faced numerous setbacks, including a tragic on-set accident and reports of creative differences between Kamal Haasan and Shankar.
India 3 Release Depends on Game Changer’s Success
Lyca Productions is now banking on Shankar’s upcoming project Game Changer, starring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani, to recover from these financial blows. If Game Changer performs well, it might increase the likelihood of Indian 3 getting a theatrical release. However, should Game Changer falter, Lyca might push for an OTT release for Indian 3, despite Shankar’s reluctance to abandon a traditional cinema launch, given his standing as one of India’s premier directors.
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan is shifting focus away from Indian 2’s disappointment, as he gears up for Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. The success or failure of Game Changer will not only influence Shankar’s future moves but also the release path for Indian 3.
