The much-anticipated OTT release of Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram and directed by Pa Ranjith, seems to be facing significant delays, leaving fans anxious. After hitting theatres on August 15, the film was initially set to land on Netflix on September 20. However, the digital release has been postponed, sparking a wave of speculation and frustration on social media.
Why the Delay?
Though the exact reasons for the hold-up remain unclear, several theories have surfaced online. One popular rumor suggests that certain scenes in Thangalaan may conflict with the content guidelines of OTT platforms. These include sequences involving beef consumption and buffalo slaughter, which could be viewed as sensitive topics for some communities. To avoid potential backlash, platforms like Netflix may be considering editing or cutting these scenes altogether, although no official statement has been made by the filmmakers.
Legal Troubles Add to the Delay
In addition to the content concerns, a new legal challenge has emerged. A person named Porkodi has reportedly filed a case seeking to block the OTT release of Thangalaan. The case claims that the film presents Buddhism in a favourable light while allegedly negatively portraying the Vainavam religion. This, according to the complaint, could spark religious tensions once the film is released online.
Netflix’s Uncertain Stance
Amid these controversies, rumors have swirled that Netflix might be reconsidering its Rs 35 crore deal for the film’s digital rights. Some reports suggest that Netflix has concerns about the film’s potential performance on its platform, and there’s speculation that the streaming giant could pull out of the agreement entirely. However, neither Netflix nor the film’s producers have commented on this speculation, leaving fans in the dark about what’s next.
Box Office Performance and Fan Reception
Despite the issues surrounding its OTT release, Thangalaan garnered praise for its storyline and performances. Made with a hefty budget of Rs 135 crore, the film has so far earned Rs 68.5 crore at the worldwide box office, which, while respectable, falls short of expectations. The film features a star-studded cast including Chiyaan Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, and Pasupathy, among others.
Produced by Dhananjayan G and KE Gnanavel Raja under the banners of Studio Green and Neelam Productions, Thangalaan boasts music composed by GV Prakash Kumar and cinematography by Kishor Kumar. Despite the setbacks, fans are still hopeful for a timely OTT release, eagerly awaiting the chance to watch the film from the comfort of their homes.
